Nonfiction Comics

Illustration, Writing, Lettering

I create some of my most meaningful personal work when I pair my images with words. I love to write as well as draw, but neither mode of communication feels capable of telling the whole story alone. Recently, I’ve been pairing words and images in the context of nonfiction comics — below are a few favorites, all digitally hand-drawn and -lettered.

The first project below takes place in a convenience store in Hungary, where I lived from 2013-2017, and deals with trying to re-access (and share with others) the daily texture of an old life.

This second project is a study of mood — I worked to create a sense of place around the neighborhood of a favorite former house.

This final project is the journey of a Thuja plicata seed as it’s transported to a resting place and becomes a full-grown cedar.
